I think he's looking for the capability to slide a point along it's local U or V direction. That's not possible in SI3D without resorting to deformations.
You can, however, insert/remove points using the Model > Effects > Subdivision command. That will preserve surface shape.
You can also use Model > Edit > Slidepoints+ to slide points along an existing surface (kind of like shrinkwrapping using the camera's point of view as reference).
FInally, if you surface is deformed by a curve or another surface, then you can do the slide point along U and/or V.
