NV30!

Hi!
I heard that Nvidia will release the next generation graphic chip! This is NV30 and is believed to be 3 times faster than Geforce 4600!
The question is When??
A friend said that it will be launched at 16 of November!
Has anyone of you any information about this?
How about the cost..?
Someone told me that it will be at the range of the cost of the Geforce 4600.....

NVIDIA seems to beat ATI again!

Yeah this card looks sweet and is what I am waiting on. It will basically be a "Geforce 5" but is AGP 8x and yes 4x faster then the Geforce 4 Ti4600.

It is being released in mid-late November (at Comdex I believe) and should be available beginning of December according to nvidia. However, recent opinions and rumors place the ability to get non-oem NV30s will not happen till about March of next year

Lets hope it will be out soon! ... just need to find a good AGP 8x MB now.

Well I am on a 3dLabs Oxygen GMX 2000 so it is quite out-dated too.

I heard that you will be able to get it from certain oems, like alienware, if you can afford their prices. Of course this would only be in one of their new machines.

My personal idea is to search the hell out of pricewatch, mysimon, pricegrabber, etc. to see if anyone is selling it in Dec.

I have a sneaking feeling that nvidia will force some out to buy before christmas just so they can start competing w/ ATI again for the holiday shopping spree season. So lets hope that idea is right

I mean yeah i agree with you that in order to have the great perfomance you need AGP x8 but it is not essential.
The differences between AGP x4 and AGP x8 are negligent. The performance will be almost the same!

right now agp 8x is basically marketing hype. just look at which cards nvidia decided to upgrade from 4x to 8x in the geforce 4 line- the 4mx and the 4200, the two lowest end cards. If it really made much of a difference they would have changed their flagship cards too. in a year or two when bandwidth has increased across the rest of the system, we might start seeing situations where 8x is actually noticeably faster then 4x, but untill then, nada.

Just to make sure everyone is clear, the NV28 which is already out is the 8x spin on the GeForce 4. NV30 is something completely new (it will also be 8x).

AGP 8x is physically the same as 4x with the simple exception in that it makes use of a couple extra pins. The end result is roughly twice the ammount of bandwidth to the card. This translates into about a 4-6% difference in performance given the shortcomings of x86. The idea is that when the video card runs out of local memory to store textures it will start to use system memory. This sounds good and all except the overhead involved in reading textures straight out of system memory kills the framerate.
AGP 8x is supposed to combat that.
People going from 4x to 8x won't notice a difference since every card out there tries to keep textures in local video memory anyway. (occasionally one might slip by; you notice when framerate drops to 2fps)

Yes right now the difference between 8x and 4x AGP isn't that much of a difference. Reading the future possability articles about 8x AGP leads to a lot of new ideas though.

I have a machine that is AGP 2x AGP and I got that when 4x came out and now I can't stick anything other then 2x in the board so my personal push is to get the newest AGP slot just for down the road. Plus we do graphics and why not have the fastest graphics hardware if it is out?

I wish nvidia would start doing some press releases soon about the nv30.

Anybody know some good MBs coming out w/ AGP 8x, can hold 3+gig of RAM (in 1 gig sticks)?

nvidia will announce november 18 the future of nv30.
if you go to a few news sites they link to teaser videos on nvidia.com about the nv30. the hype machine begins.

As far as motherboards; I'm in the market soon for a new rig; so I'll be looking into that myself.

agp 8 uses lower voltage than agp 4 so even if the band is not much copared to on board memory theres no guarantee new 8x cards will even work on agp4 altoug i think gamer cards will be backward copatible for a while.

AGP 8x isn't 1.5V?

Also, most boards that are currently being manufactured to accomodate AGP 8x are backwards compatible to 4x, but not 2x.

Regarding the question about AGP 8x boards that support 3 1G sticks of RAM, it depends on what processor configuration you're interested in. For example, if you're looking at a single P4, SiS has a new board that looks pretty good (I think it's the SiS 648 chipset).
