Thus far with the little bit of time I've played with my 64 x 2 i've had nothing but praise for it. The Opteron line is a lil slow from my guesstimation as far as clock speed but are solid over clockers from what I've read. You don't need to raid but if your moving big files to or from the Hard Drive you may want Raid. I use a single WD Rapter 74 Gig 10k rpm drive. I get good boot times. Two 1400s in SLI will be real nice for in Maya work. Your P4 will be an ok render node but Maya does take advantage of dual core or dual proc for rendering. not sure about premier and after effects. If your just starting out learning maya you may want to just upgrade your exsisting unit and wait til AMD releases their AM2 platform this summer. The FX5500 won't be good for working IN maya but won't matter when you start rendering out. That will all fall onto the proc anyways (unless you use hardware render). So, I would just beef up the storage and video and you should be good for starting out!
you can get dualcored opetrons, but theres not much extra joy of 4 procs on workstation, your better of thavving 2 diualproc machiens insteqad. And dont ovrclock machines you actualy work on, you will swear the day it backfires. '
Get redundancy on the raid. Now this is actualy as inportant as backing up regulary since it costs you easily 2000- 10000 dollars per crash for lost JOBS. not to mention loss of future clients. Thsis is especialy tryue if you work for adverts where deadliens are TRULY last and finaldealdlines.
Opteron 100s and X2 are basically the same cpu, same pin-out, same cache.
Opteron 100s is a uni-processor dual core 939-pin CPU, unlike the regular dual-proc dual core 940-pin 200 series Opteron.
the choice should come down to mb, find the mb first, then decide if you want to go with Opteron 100s or X2.
as for FX1400 SLI, I would recommend going with a single FX3450 instead. it costs about the same, and I believe speed should be close also. and if you decide to upgrade later, you can always add a second FX3450.
I would highly recommend raid 0 WD Raptor drives, drives are often the bottleneck. also throw in an extra 300/400gb 7200rpm drive for backup.

how about opteron 200s vs x2. i am planning to buy a machine either with single 265 opteron (will put second proc later) or x2. which would be the right choice? or should i wait a little more for new processor from amd? i work in max+vray for architectural visualization.
I would say if you are only only to use 2 single core 200 series processor, than going with X2 would save you money for similar performance.
but with Opteron 200 series processor, you have the option of going to dual core (so you get a total of 4 cores). and the rumor is that you will be able to put in a quad core chip (total of 8 cores) in it also.
