i got my p3...( about time ) i installed it... but when i boot up it says p3 533e... so i think hey..ho problem...ill just change that in bios.. bios freeszes.. DAMN...so i reboot...i cant get past my video card screen.
so im back on my heavy duty p2 266
theres no stores near me so i dotn want to go today.. i build my p2 266 on my own without problems.. ive never had any pc problems in the past... this is new..
by the way...
i got an ABIT ( be6 ?! if i can remember correctly ) mobo and it supports up to a p3 850e i got the latest bios for it so thats not the problem.
my powersupply is working on 115v.. my cpu is set for 2.8 volts. should i increase the voltage, exit bios...turn off pc..install p3?.. btw...what voltage to use with the p3 800 anyway?.
also... will a p2 heatsink work with a p3 one?...
how do i go about removing the heatsink from the p2 anyway.. i got the fan to come off easy but the actual heatsink is a pain to remove.( seems like its bolted in..)..( i havent been harsh to it yet..)
how long could i use the p3 without the heatsink?...( if i underclocked it about 200 mhz temporarely( until i get a p3 heatsink ----monday..or even tomorrow)...it wont get to hot right?..
So you are saying you are attempting to run your pentium 3 800mhz WITHOUT A HEATSINK/FAN COMBO? Chances are your chip is now a keychain... most high speed pentiums/althons will only run a few seconds without a heatsink before it burns up.
A p2 fan is not compatible with a P3 unless its a slot 1 design. and even then it may not be worth the trouble of drilling the screw mounts or using force to unmount the heatsink. you can get a decent heatsink for 15$.. a quality one for 25$.
If your chip still manages to post.. stop powering it up until you get a heat sink/fan.
Most chips since the Pentium 75mhz requires at least a heatsink [passive cooing] You can probably get up to 400mhz before you really need active cooling if your case is well ventilated [my intergraph has heatsinks only on a dual P2 400mhz but utilized a cooling shunt to blow cool air on the chips].
Don't skimp on cooling... get a fan/hs combo, apply a bit of thermal paste[should come with the HSF] and mount the chip... make sure the chip mounts flatly against the silicon block on the top of the chip [its square and the size of a dime]. make sure its mounted properly or there will be insufficent heat transfer.. even worse if you don't watch it you will crack the core of the chip making it useless.
Never use a stock heatsink and fan. its way too hard to remove. get the orb fan. it looks like a K&N car filter. I built my brother a computer dual CPU 1 ghz Abit mobo.
DO NOT USE STOCK HEATSINK AND FAN! IT SUCKS BIG TIME!WHen u try to remove the heatsink the thermal paste goes all over the place and it gets messy and your cpu will look scratched up. Itll work but I wouldnt use the Stock heatsink on the safe side. Its acts like a bitch.
the ORB fan is awsome. I bought the fan for $12 and its really kool looking, especially if u have 2 cpus. It makes your computer look like a twin turbine engine. hehehe . I also bought extra fans on the computerand now it feels like a fridge.

ok some comments 1 i have a P3 800eb and i let the bios decide the voltage but i believe it was something like 1.6 or 1.65 or 1.5 it deffinetly wasnt 2.8 so thats one thing thats wrong 2 deffinetly get some kind of heat sink fan combo for your P3 it NEEDS IT 3 do not get an orb every review ive read of the orb says its all looks and nothing else you do realise your orb performs worse then the stock intel PIII heatsinkfan combo (the intel stock one is actually a pretty good middle of the road cooling option) i would check out www.tomshardware.com hes got some non-biased (a rare for tom) and good reviews for cooling options and please dont run that PIII with out a heatsink fan any more id hate to see you waste your money like that
Seeing he didn't have a HSF, I assume he got a OEM chip. On the long shot the Intel stock HSF are pretty good.. better then most of the aftermarket fans [check out hardocp.com where they had a big 50 fan comparison test a few months back]. The stock fan does its job [otherwise there would be alot of dead chips and oem and intel would hate to have to replace stuff all the time]. If you plan to get into extreme overclocking I would then get a aftermarket fan.
The orb fans are ok.. I wouldn't pay a ton of cash for them.. I have a gold orb on a 733 at home and a super orb on my 1100mhz atlhon.. the super orb IMHO was a waste of money [the silver orb can handle 1100mhz no problem] so basically I'm using an overkill heatsink on a chip that doesn't need it. Plus the Super-Orb is noisy as hell.. makes my computer sound like a mini-hair dryer when its on.
Looks of the fans don't matter when its inside the case where you'll never see them again unless you upgrade. It is a decent performing fan. Another thing to note is the retaining mechanism of the orbs.. the newer orbs don't have a problem anymore with cracking cpu cores [the latch type] the older twist type is tricky to install.
If you want to get a nice cooling fan that moves more air then the orbs get a recent winglobal FOP or a Alpha =).
k..i went to my friends store and he installed the heatsink/fan on to the chip... ill tell you how it goes.. ( by the way...the 2.8v is the default for the p2 266( thats what the ABIT mobo tells me anyway...)
