Paint Effects Control

ok, so i make a cube paintable.
i then paint some grass on the cube....but i notice after i paint, i see the grass that is created but it runs off the cube and appears to be floating.

is there a way to make it so the grass on "grows" strictly from the cubes face so there will be no run-off.

another example of my problem, is that i am creating grass for a yard, but when i paint the yard surface, the grass ends up running over and it looks like it is growing from the sidewalk.

any help will be most appreciated.
