Paint In 3d Question

Ah, the problem was the scale. I was using meters and the 3D things only really show up in centimeters.

Okay, so I'm all set to paint say a tree in 3D on the surface plain. I have version 6.5. When I go to paint I don't get the red paint circle and I can only paint a line. I've followed the books instructions (page 537, Getting Started with Maya 6.5).

"From the Paint Effects shelf, select the Daisy Brush Large. In the scene view the cursor changes to a red circle with a vertical line indicating it is set to paint a stroke."

Well I don't get the red circle. Any ideas. I would have posted this in "new user" but this section is painting specific.[/b]

Not seeing the preview stamp could be graphics card related. Do you get anything created when you click and drag on the groundplane (after selecting the daisy brush preset)? Also as you noticed, pfx does not work well if your units are not set to cm (the default).

The daisies are about 2 units high(unless you scale the brush... drag while holding the b key), so make sure your camera is close enough to the ground to see this. Also make sure that you have not somehow disabled the pfx module (in the prefs window under modules).

Hey Mr. Brinsmead, was there ever any consideration given to the concept of paint effects modeled to scale by default? In other words, with a template brush global scale of 1, wouldn't it have been great if the daisies were more like 50 to 100 cm tall rather than 2 cm? That way they would be just like daisies in the real world. But of course, that would be at odds with everything else in Maya, with default primitives of 1 cm etc...

I know it's too late to do anything about it, just wondering if this had ever come up during development... because I for one am always fighting with Maya because I want to model my scenes to scale.
