Hmmm, maybe the feedback attribute doesn't matter. However, here is something that does. I am using Maya 8.5. I have this bear skin that I was applying Maya fur to.
For some reason maya Fur suddenly was behaving like it was completely broken. Like the artisan tool was running very slow. When I painted fur direction, half the model wouldn't respond to my painting. Parts of the model would painted black regardless of the direction of my stroke. etc.
So I did a test case on a sphere. I applied the fur and it behaved fine.
I went back to my bear model and pulled out on UV's. It turned out I had ONE face that fell out of the 0 to 1 UV range. I fixed this one face and viola! Everything suddenly worked fine! You might want to make sure you don't have any UV"s out of the 0-1 range.
Maya should have reported some kind of a warning message about this!
