Hi semerson,
I had to do this same effect here at work a few months ago. I found that the best way to get it right was to actually model the tears to look exactly the way I wanted. Model them flat and then apply a bend deformer or a blend shape effect, if you prefer, to get them look "punched". I know it sounds like a pain in the neck - and it is a bit - but this gives you a more controlable outcome as opposed to the Shatter effect's lack of control on the "look" of the shards.
And I agree with mulder. If someone thinks 2D and 3D are like water and oil, I feel sorry for his career... He has probably never read any major publication in the field of 3D animation and special fx, and possibly never saw anything about the making of movies like Toy Story, Lost World, Dinosaur, etc.
I'd rather believe Mr. edisonbattery is just trying to stir up some turmoil in the forum... Then he probably isn't so misinformed as it seems.
