Per vertex transparency

Hopefully this is a simple question:
I'm writing an importer in which I specify transparency values for each vertex, using MFnMesh::setVertexColors.
However, these do not show in Maya, they seem to be overridden by the selected texture. How do I get the transparency to work?
Thanks in advance,

Unfortunately, per vertex coloring is really only used for data storage. It will not show in the viewport nor will it render out. If you want you could set up a shading network to take advantage of this, or write your own custom nodes to do so. That's all I can suggest.

I thought Maya5 now rendered vertex coloring? no?
I also thought you could display the vertex coloring in the viewport with the custom poly display menu or the bonus games use to have a short cut to it called vertex color display.
Or am I just totally missing the point of what your talking about?

Er. Sorry. My bad, it only shows in the viewport. When you enable the vertex coloring mode, it will display vertex colors - however, it is blended with the whichever material channel you're coloring (see the Custom Polygon Display). I'm not positive on this one, but I don't believe we translate the transparency for vertex colors. If I'm recalling everything correctly, that's how it works.

And it won't render out in any of the four renderers in Maya v5.
