Okay I made the jump to 2k from nt4 after I heard about the SP6 issues and had noticed network errors when rendering...
After doing the fabulous MS updates for combatibility and service pack 1 I thought I had made a very clean and refreshing break with no problems. Soft runs great and XSI opened and ran fine with a few render tests.
Now im settled down and working on my project again and cant help but notice awefull resource issues. Opening a scene can sometimes be a big thing but the refresh is terrible in comparison to NT4. Selecting my charactor and hitting up date in the animation mixer also produces this. Windows task manager may not be the best thing to stare at but ive trusted it for awhile now with NT and I am seeing some rather alarming cpu spikes from my Dual p3 500 ( 786 mb ram to boot)
My paging file is set to about 1.5 gig since I have the space and this has seemed to work wonders in the past 2 weeks since i upped it when working in NT4.
For those of you that have posted about no problems in win2k i have a few questions.
1. optimization issues. What else can I do to other then setting xsi.exe at high priority to get better speeds.
- are you all using quad zeons? hehe had to ask
Any advice is appreciated as I am liking the move to win2k but the resource fluxuation i am seeing is making my stomach sink... and my work flow.

another note as im working here.... perhaps some of you can open your task manager and watch the cpu usage. once again this is with a dual p3 500: I am seeing a constant 50% cpu usage as I drag my animation mixer slider through saved shapes and a wav file. while scrubbing through a good 500 frames of animation at a slow pace to see the phenome shapes and animated gestures it stays relativley constant at 50 -55% in the resource meter.
I guess what Im asking before I put this long day to an end is if this is typical of the machine im using compared to an onctaine or rendercube.
Thanks in advance

)) LOL.
Because, operation of draggin a slider is not multy threaded. If you have 2x500 its not the same as 1x1000. You have to have two different threads running on each processor. That's what should happen if you render on two proc's (and your render setup is right)

? you say that dragging the scrubber is not a multi threaded support feature yet both my cpus spike at 50% when this is the only thing im doing on the computer... I dont understand.
I guess im more concerned with resource issues with win 2k though. Any suggestions?

I don't know if this is a glich in TaskManager (I have the same thing 50% on both proc's), but that meant that it's not multythreaded. Even some of the rendering parts in most programs is not multithreaded (like bluring and other postprocesses) So this kind of operations won't take a full advantage of two processers if they were not programmed to do so. I'd even say that programming a scrubbing to be multithreaded is a waste of time. And personally, I can't imagine how to programm a multythreaded scrubbing.
PS. Just a thought. Suppose that this scrubbing was multythreaded, didn't you think that it might be your videocard that is slowing thinng down?

Ive been hearing allot of video cards in recent posts to make me wonder. However NT4 did not have an issue, this is a recent resource problem I have noticed with win 2k. MS site had an update for my estornado card which gave me video problems. I got the latest driver from es for win2k and the video issue went away. I suppose I could blame the video card but since i payed 1500 for it and it has worked just fine up until 2k im more apt to blame the operating system ( plenty of posts on doing that too =o)
The fact is NT4 sp6 is faster then win2k on the setup i have. whether its win2k, video driver support, etc i dont know. My first thought was to ask some of you what I can do to optimize resource issues with 2k. It updates slower, and higher cpu spiking....
