Plugin won't load: specified module not found

I'm having problems getting my plugins to load on certain versions of maya. I compiled a plugin for maya unlimited 4.0, and it ran fine on my machine and a few others. But other seemingly identical versions of maya won't load the plugin, giving the error message: no plug-in loaded - "the specified module could not be found". This has me completely befuddled - has anyone encountered a similar problem?

I've had that problem when a plug-in is using a shared .dll and Maya can't find the dll. The user had put the shared dll into a directory that was not in the PATH list. Maya couldn't find it and complained with the same message you are getting.

Check the environment setup on the machines that can't load the plug-in.
