Is this video card a good card? I do realize that there are indeed much better and more expensive cards, but I would like to know if this card in particular is of proven quality and performance.

anything slower than a fx 1000 is not worth it for you, you can get a agamer cxard thats better than 500 if you can get the gliches to not hinder your work.

Youd be dissapointed in a quaddro fx 500. its cheap but its crap.

Actually the gaming cards by default lack DCC features such as Hardware Overlay found in Quadro, FireGL and Wildcat cards. Some of which can be obtained through software emulation with RivaTuner or hardware modding but not always a method some wish to follow.

As for a low cost DCC card look at the models between Quadro 4 to Quadro 1000. If all you can afford is a Quadro 4 or Quadro FX 500 then go for it especially since you're planning to use highend software with it.

OK, I am willing to buy a Quadro FX1100 Video Card for about $700.00, but I hope this is not overkill since I am pretty much using Maya on a consumer level.

By the way, according to Alias's web site, Quadro FX300 and Quadro FX500 are good cards that have been tested with the Maya software.

well problem is that while fx 500 is fine its DAMN slow, so if you plan to do anything thats more intensive than just BASIC stuff with not much textures etc etc id go for the fx 1100.

Sine youd probably be more satisfied usinga a consumer over the qfx 500, even with gliches. So youll get less performance for more money.

Alias only says they are bug free, not talking about performance, now a a fx 1100 is pretty fast, nothing spectacular tough.

Usualy in my experience the more novice you are the more strain on your graphics card you put, since you are less optimal in geometry use.

if FX1100 is too pricey, try FX1000 or FX980. little difference between them. FX1100 price should be about $650 or less. FX1000 about $490.

Got one in my workstation and it is fine in both Max and Maya. Plus after the benchs it's close too high end Quadro under Maya.

what are you sayng that you have a quaddro fx 1100 or 500 or thet 500 is close to a 1100? Depends on how you define close.

Also dont understand what you mean with high end quaddro, a ahigh end quaddro refeers to 2000, 3000 and 4000 wich are waaay faster than 1100 especialy when you turn textures on, wich is where 500 looses to 1100 too. 1100 is midrange and 500 is entry level.

Under Maya the Quadros are pretty close, wich doesn't not means that they are equivalent, but a high end quadro(2000 to 4000) doesnt worth the extra pricing for a regular job.

With max it's another story since this app requires high shading capacities thats involves high BW.

However my quadro 500 is really smooth for what i'm doying with it and regarding of his really low price.

At home i use a Quadro FX 700 with is a bit faster and just less than 200

yes 700 is much better investment true. Also remebre that maya is moving more towards programmable fragment code so the effect is going to be needed. I mean ia use a lot of cgFX shaders nowdays (well theres that and then theres gelato wich im considering to puchase), and the high quality viewports wich eat effect a lot, even i cant keep it on for bigger stuff on a aquaddro 3000.

As for effect it realy depends on what one does offcourse lowpoly modelling... fine get anything in fact the worse card the better since you get a feel of its performance hit better
