Poly count disappearing

Im using Maya 2010 on Linux and the polycount disappears on me.  Even if I restart my machine and maya whatever scene the count disappears in it stays gone.  Only thing I can do is import my scene into a new scene, but then i have to rename a million geometry names.

Any ideas?

symptoms:  model a face with polys in maya with poly count turned on.  work for a while.  save often.
look up, poly count is no longer on screen.  turning it back on has no effect.  it is still missing even if you restart your machine.

how do you import and not have it add the previous filename to the beginning of the geo?
