Project settings 1080P/23.976 FPS

I'm working on a project right now and the settings I'm told to use are 1080P/23.976 Fps. Fine. I'll be working in Maya and After Effects but right now I am wondering what the best setting for my comp in AE should be. Under the presets I am choosing HDTV 1080 24 as this is the closest setting that seems appropriate. There will be no filmed footage and everything will be generated on a computer. 

When choosing this preset there is a dropdown option to change the frame rate of 24 to 23.976. Is this necessary? Is there a difference? Should I just keep the 24fps? There are so many aspect ratios and formats that I never know what to do. Perhaps if someone has the answer or a good resource for understanding this stuff that would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Is there a difference?

If you need to sync audio for extremely long inetrwalls in one shot then yes. You will deviate a bit less than one and a half frame per minute or about a frame every thousand frames. You could conform your audio to be a bit faster so thet when you work youll do thet one extra frame ok. Or well it actually doepends on how you scout your audio.

Or you can just scale your anim slightly when going to render.
