Quad / Eight Processor & Maya

Dear Readers ..

I am in the need for a new workstation ... my last one is a dual Xeon 2.8
with windows XP.
Now I wanted to go with the Tyan Transport VX50 with up to 8 opteron.
Graphic card should be a pny quad fx 4500..mem, HDs and the usual stuff
to be up to date for a longer while.

now forgive my lame question but I cant find any info online ..
Will windows XP 64 pro run on this system ? I see nowhere how many CPUs
the 64 Bit XP can handle.... if XP wont run .. which Operationsystem do
I need to run Maya, ZBrush, AfterFX and PSD.
what about Vista 64 pro ?

I remember our shop tested a couple of quad dual core Opteron (that's 8 procs). Remember that you can't use xp, we were testing it with 2003 server.

if you were using it for Maya, I don't see any advantage of using 8 procs. anything more than 2 procs only make sense in rendering. also I remember quad dual core Opteron cost over $10k just for CPUs and MB. I would recommend going with dual Opteron dual core (that's 4 procs), as price are relatively low. and don't cost much more thatn single core Opteron (less than $1k for both procs).
