I'm familiar with final cut pro and also vegas on the pc and have recently started premiere and ae, I'm having trouble rendering 16:9 DV footage, it seems to always end up as 4:3 (even when the project and render settings are on 16:9) when I preview it (with Windows Media) or import it into another application like vegas, and if I resize it to 16:9 the colors darken and are slightly blurred. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing 16:9 dv footage has a aspect ratio of 4:3, its pixel is just squished more. The reason your player doesnot show it right is because your player hasnt been told its a anamorphic image.
Anyawy ae has many modes one for pixel to pixel perfect data and one for stretched to be squished data.
