is there any benifits between using character sets verses making 'Quick selection sets'
where you make shelf tabs to quick select body controls?
They accomplish different things, selection sets store selections on the nodes. Character sets contain animation channels, so character sets allow you to collect different animatable attributes to one place so you can foce keys setting to propagate to right parts of what you do.
In essence they are the same thing tough, sets, they just have different membership restrictions, and character sets are bundled into the functionality of keying/trax, thats all. Theres nothing that says you can not substitute any other set type with them its just a naming and type convenetion that helps you organize data when you know what data is in what container.
Like saying theres nothing that says you cant store photographs in ring binders tough, usually we call theese photo albums if you do, however. Thus theres some restriction set to enforce what to set in the binder to make programmersand peoples lives easier.
