Ram Questions Windows 32 Bit

Hi,

I'm running windows xp pro 32bit. Is it worth getting 4 gb of ram? i heard applications max out at 3 gb, but maybe the other gig is left for running the os?

Or should I just get 3 gb of ram?

Thanks for any help

Some applications max at 3gb most max out at 2Gb or actually closer to 1.8 on windows. Only applications that are large address aware max out to 3Gb. Maya is as of 7.0 large address aware but maya to Mr is not. (havent actually tested the 2008 version)

Well you can always sue the extra ram as a memory disk if you cant find any other use for it. And yes the operating system interleaves the memory so even if maya used 3G that would leave 1Gb for other apps.

thanks for the info jooja

if you are running 32-bit XP, it is a good idea to mod boot.ini (takes 1 minute) so app can see 3GB.

Just note after adding the /3gb switch in the boot.ini file the application must still be large address aware to have access to the additional gb of ram.

Even if you are using 4GB ram, XP will only recognize it as 3GB... I also don't think you can use 3GB (1x2GB, 1x1GB), you might encounter RAM issues.

Part of the memory is reserved for the kernel, so if you indtend to use 3GB be sure to have more than 3gb of mem.
