Ram Questions

Hi, I am gonna upgrade my dual PIII800 to Athron XP processor. So I have to buy a Athron CPU and a new motherboard.
I found Athron mothermother board uses DDR SDram or SDram. And DDR SDram is twice more expensive than regular SDram.

So here are my question.
Is DDR ram is worth to buy it? (The mothe board that uses DDRsdram more expensive. And how much faster than SDram?).
What is difference among DDR SDram and DDR SDram ECC and DDR SDram ECC registered?(Which should I buy it?)

I will be waiting for some inputs.
Thanks guys
Have a great day.

DDR = double data rate (double clocked) RAM, this is the state of the art besides RDRAM (RAMBUS) , which seems somewhat on the fringe of going away. Go DDR.

ECC = error correcting. This is only minimally important when you are doing CG art. It is more desireable in a server or on a machine doing scientific or cuurency-based comupting. I wouldn't pay the extra money, there is no real perofrmance or reliability benefit here.

Registered = tested and conforming to a set of strict rules for fabrication, performance and I/O integrity. This is the premium stuff that comes in higher-end workstations. It's just better quality stuff, and may be worth the extra 10 or 20% to get .

DDR SDRAM is double data rate menaing that it is twice as fast as normal SDRAM

Registered memory allows the motherboard to hold larger amounts of RAM

ECC memory is error corrected code.. it will prevent memory errors from occurring.

Typically ECC and Registered memory is designed for servers .. so it's a little more expensive and so are the boards that use it.

I've been very satisified with DDR and these days it's not expensive.. certainly not like RAMbus is.

You'd be better off getting a straight DDR board, one based on the AMD 760 (most stable) or VIA KT266a (fastest) chipsets.

Or Better yet, a dual Athlon rig.
