Ray type shader

has anybody checked out how to use the raytype node?
iwhere should I plug this node in?
any experiences?

depp. i set this thing up this morning...

you only need to connect the outvalue of the desired shader into the in value of the rayType node and then enable that ray... the out value of the rayType gets sent into a surface shader out color (or whatever)...

try using texture files... or 3d textures with extreme color while you set it up... and then use the actual shader you want to hafve more subtle effects...

ive been able to get it working with reflection, FG; and primary... (dont ask me about photons. i hate them) once i enabled transparency on the color(primary ray) shader i ended up with black on the inside... come to think of it i might not have had enable referaction set inside one of the shaders...

point being; i think the usefullness of this shader is in being able to pass shaders of reduced quality into the rays beyond primary... and thus speed up rendertime...

any exotic effects like transparent shadows and (i dont know how, but light shaders) didnt produce any result...
bear in mind that mentalray shaders have a light array that must be manually connected in them - in place of mayas internal light linking... this shader has no array of this type... so if you connect it into the mentalray shaders tab... i dont think youll see anything... and if you pass a texture directly to it (without going through a shader) this texture will not consider any of the lights contributing to your scene... which is okay for FG in quick renders... but will leave you with reflections that have no specular...

further - ive heard that the release 7 of microsoft develp studio will bollix the shaders it compiles... so it could be that your shader is not working... which i found happened with a new version of one of the MR shaders...

call me if you need to... i can post the shader and the scenefile both if you need.

Hello there,

What kind of rayType node are you guys talking about? AFAIK there is no such node in the MR for Maya, just in XSI. A while ago I wrote a shader with similar name for MR for Maya, but it is not online now, so I'd be surprised to find it here. Could you enlighten me about this topic, and tell a bit more about what kind of problems you had with it? I might as well correct them in my own shader.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Szabolcs

I downloaded somewhere (I really don

und so habe ich es gesagt!

msds 7 compiles shaders somehow improperly... the one you have is probably an updated version... arianrod has modified, and therefore, is now VERSCHISSEN.

did you get my email to your other account? ive posted a working version of the files along with a scene, which (with a working shader) you probably dont even need.

love always, dein barchen bobby
