@@@I think you are very wrong. You can use MentalRay standalone without a problem. I know because I do use it. What you cannot do (I think) is debug MR shaders, but when it comes to rendering it's all good. (And by the way - if you cannot use it why do you think it is installed?)
As far as the render issue >>> First try rendering with a single MI2 file (frame) and look for any error messages that appear (if at all) : It will say something like "cannot find path specified, bla-bla"
As of XSI v2.0 you cannot render .mi2 files from the command line with ray3.exe unless you purchase standalone mental ray licenses or one of the additional batch rendering options. Neither XSI Essentials or XSI Advanced will allow ray3.exe to render .mi2 files from the command line because they do not come with the necessary license tokens. Any attempts will result in an error message like this:
C:SoftimageXSI_2.03> ray3.exe -verbose on test.mi2
MAIN .0 fatal: Sorry, no license available
If you can render .mi2 files, your workstation is borrowing the necessary license token from somewhere on your network, or you are using cracked software.
