Re-installation and database problems

hey guru's i hope you can help me.

After a system crash, i've had to re-install softimage 3.9.2.
fortunately, i still have all my databases backed up.. .only problem is, when i try to link them thru the DBmanager, it gives me this error:

[b]The directory pointed by SI_DBDIR does not exist,
or you do not have access priviliges.

Current directory has been used for DatabaseDir.rsrc[/b]

Now it still let's me link to that DB but only TEMPORARILY and if i try to load anything from it, it crashes my computer.

On top of that, when i try to create a new DB, i get the same message, and then the DB is built...

the only problem with both aspects is that when i exit and re-enter soft, those DB's i've created or added are no longer present.

I've tryed accessing my DB information thru the softimage user tools, and when i click to edit the DatabaseDir.rsrc, i get this message:
Unable to open the file: c:usersadministratorDatabaseDir.rsrc

Is there any way to tell soft NOT to go looking for it there?

or how do i fix this?

Sounds like you need a c:usersyourlogin directory. Of course "yourlogin" is the login you are currently using. Just create it like you would any other folder.
Soft uses this directory to store your database information. Without it you can only have temporary links like you are experiencing.
You will also need this directory for a .rayhosts file if you want to network render with MentalRay.

The thing is, right, is that I have NEVER used database manager or exchange, other than setting a Default DB. You can drag and drop your database into the softimage folder. Then open soft, go to Get> Scene and locate the softimage directory. Your DB should be there, in grey text. Double click on it and you will be asked if you want to add the database to the current database list. Click yes and then exit the get scene. Now when you go to the DB manager, your new database will be there.
