Realistic ground

Okay, this post might be a little abstract, but I was wondering if there was any special way of making a decent-looking outdoor ground scene. My animation contains a landscape that stretches into the distance and I have a hay field right next to a normal grass field. I wanted to use hair for the grass but because it stretches way into the distance, its impossible to add that much grass without crashing the computer. I've tried to apply it just in the forground but the camera pans and you see the seam where the grass ends and the texture map begins. The ground also looks too flat and non-bumpy (?). How can I make it look better; more realistic textures? more detail in the physical model???? Are there any secret tips that you must know to make a good outdoor scene???? HELP????

I would try to blend the hairs with the texture in post. With passes you can create a gradient mask. So I would make my texture begin more closer to the camera, but the blend will make a smooth transition between this and the hairs.
