Render passes in Maya 2010?

I am trying to find out how but cannot figure out how to get different render layers for a diffuse pass, shadow pass, etc. In the render settings there are mental ray options for passes. But then all controls are grayed out.

How do you render with render layers in Maya 2010 using Mental Ray?

Umm,,, lets get the vocabulary straight, they are not mutually inteligible.

So with render layers your talking about the render layer editor, and with passes your talking about.

1 Multiple outputs, also known as passes

2 or render layer overrides also known as passes

3 each render layer

Thing is the vocabulary is totally messed up because the new way of doing things ovrreides the old but has same names.

IN any case you have 2 optionso rmb click on the layer and choo ethe passes form there OR change the layer in the reder settings and then change it back this refreshes the settings.

Turned out it was another thing...

You need to be in channelbox mode in order to get to your render layers, make then, assign objects to them. But to make different passes you need to be in the attribute editor and select the layer properties (or select a preset).

Scratch that,,, you just don't see the render in the default render window, you need to go under File of the render window and go to Load Render Pass.,..

I kept wanting the old method, but with this you get all the passes in one render, great :).

You could do all your paases in one go since maya 8.5
