I'm starting to learn Maya and I've learned a lot width Highend3d!! thanks!
Now I'm having a litlle problem... When I do render current frame, its says "rendering" but when it finishes everything stays black... If I want to see what has been rendered I have to close the render window and open it again.
I think your problem is related to your graphics card, post some info on that please, try upgrading your graphics card drivers, also if you're using XP, right click in the maya shortcut icon and in the compatibility tab check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" check box and choose windows 2000, that make maya more stable while rendering on the desktop.
I am having this same problem, but the information in the various responses does not seem to help me resolve the problem. I am using Maya PLE 8.5 with a single object. I tried with the default lighting and all renderings are simply the watermark (a black rendering) I have given my object a material: mi_metallic_paint1 The object is a sphere which flattens out and gets real wide when it hits the "floor" (no floor object, just using the cartesian grid that is in the scene) I can see the object in the default perspective and orthogonal views... Actually, I just found out the problem, but I am going to post what I discovered, so if someone else sees this they can get more information. I clicked the menu item: Render Diagnostics and it said:
Starting diagnostics... Known Problems/Limitations
Warnings
- mi\_metallic\_paint1SG has no port connected. This can be dangerous for rendering.
Speed/Memory Implications
- using Render->Set NURBS Tessellation[] can improve image quality
and reduce render time by automatically setting the optimum
tessellation based on distance from the camera. The tesse
- it can be useful to run your scene through "maya -optimizeRender"
before rendering. This can help optimize the scene for rendering.

Now I am a beginner here and do not really know what the above means. I don't know how to connect a port to this material and why it had its initial state in a condition which could not be rendered, but I could guess that I should try another material. So I changed the material to a Phong Shader and voila, My object rendered!
mi_metallic_paint1SG is a mentalray shader. So the question is do you render with mentalray? (yes maya has 4 renderers ple has 1). Ok assuming you have that right. Since maya software does not render mentalray materials you would get simply black objects. So chek thet the dorpdown in render view says mentalray.
