Hi everybody,

user of maya,i,d like to know if with xsi option, rendersubregion, i could define in numbers, the exact size of,let's say 4 differents regions, including GI AND FG; then save each regions as a .mi file:
up to 10 000 x 10 000;EACH
then, render with mrstandalone v3.1 each different sub regions: will caustics, be rendered???????
even if an object from a selected subregion ,receive caustics or reflect. "generated" with an another object or light, not included in THIS selected area??
then paste them ,in phsop
mrstdalone can render such res ;but can i save to .mi file ,in xsi interface at such res.???
can mrstandalone understand .mi2,or sthing like that generated with xsi
i really need this advice
txs very much in advance!
with which version of xsi!will mrstandalone understand that??

You don't need to save a separate MI file for each subregion. Instead you will define the subregions in the XSI scene, export to MI, then the renderer will do the rest.

If I can offer some tips about large scale rendering.....

-MI2 command line rendering is obviously the best choice, as well as subregions
-Convert textures to .map files, and when you do use the -p option
-Fine-tune as much as possible BSP settings
-Make sure you have plenty of ram (of course, duh!). Set the Job Memory Limit to about half your total ram, but make sure the page file is big (like 1.5-3 Gb)
-Render in small chuncks of frames. Instead of rendering mi2 files straight from the shell (with a single command), use a .bat file with instructions to render only 30 frames at a time
-Avoid 3D motion blur and high resolution shadow maps, otherwise you will kill mental ray

thanks very much for replying!

i have mr standalone v3
so, i was wondering if ,tht's not better to save my ,let's say 20 subregions (each 5k),as .mi ;
then render them, with standalone, which doesn,t need so much ram!
then paste them in pshp;so,i,ll get an image of 20k x 20k??
i was wonderin ,as well ,if for imported files texture, with that process, i just need to save them at a res. of 5 k,
instead if ,i could have render the whole scene at 20k x 20k, i should have save the res; of this texture at 20k??
hope it make sense!!& that you understand
so, that way the size of my texture is 4 time less ;isn,t it??

hi again

but make sure the page file is big (like 1.5-3 Gb)

don,t find where ,and how to modify that
so,my imported file texture need to be ,20k
as the final res of the scene??
btw, browser from xsi base.com ,is very slow
what do i need to change?
seems to have very interesting forums

To change the pagefile size, right-click on the My Computer icon.
Go in Advanced tab
Click on Performance options
Click on Change
Select a drive and change the Initial and Max sizes. Then click Set.
You might have to reboot the machine.

About XSI Base, you may try the NetView version (click on NetView button on top of the page).

About the other questions, you have to try it.

Cheers
