I'm not sure that being able to render trims is a sufficient reason to use another package. I know, trims are cool, but for now you could use a transparency map.
Also, remember that mental ray is completely integrated into XSI, wich is not the case of Maya and 3ds max. This means that you'll never be able to reach the level of control than with XSI. Of course, if you don't want to develop shaders and you only want to use mental ray as it basically is: a renderer, well it's a question of tastes.
However, I would like to know in the near future if mental ray is as fast in Maya than in XSI, and what people think of the workflow/pipeline implementation.
