Before going further, did you checked the file permissions and ensure that the current project has an images directory ? (after all it's what Maya is asking you
)
Which means do you have a proper project with subfolders like "scenes" and "images" , with the scene you want to render into the scenes folder ...
If not, you have to create (or set) your current project using the file|project menu.
BTW Maya is supposed to have a project by default (under Documents and Settings/~username/My documents/Maya/projects) , used when no other project is set. Maybe this folder is in read-only mode ?
