Resolution for a Poster

Hi, I made a logo in Maya and the client wants to make a poster with it.
I was wondering if anyone knows what resolution i should use.

He says it's just a normal size poster.

300 dpi is common for print work.
Just take your dimensions for example 8 x 11 inchs and then multiply by your dpi.
In this case 8x11 at 300 dpi would be 2400 x 3300 pixels for the image. Of course some posters are much larger, so be prepared for
huge file.

Ok the resolution of your poster should be 1.6-2.2 times the LPI (Lines Per Inch, not DPI) value of your output device. The LPI value might wary depending on how many shades of color you would need.

so if your output is 300 dpi then it would be good for a printer that has the output resolution of something like true 600 DPI. But if you intend to do a good quality poster then ask your print shop.

Also remember that you dont wan to render too big because that will cause all sorts of problems at the print shop (not to mention your render times)

it'd save me a nightmare on occation if maya would somehow get a decent vector render.. but ahh, oh well.
Make sure you convert you file to cmyk in photoshop..

300 dpi is to much for a poster, posters and billboards are somtimes as low as 150dpi, find out from the printers how high he can print at what sizes.
if you where to print a normal size poster at 300dpi
A2 would be about 13000 pixels in width,
A1 would be about 26000 pixels in width,
this would make for filesises being to large to put the file on a cd, and i know maya would have no hope of rendering anything that large..
if all else fails go see your printer, he may even be able to give you a copy of an old poster that hes printed on disk,

150 DPI would be fine for a magazine ad or somthing paper size.
150 will turn out ofr a poster. but 300 DPI will make sure that it comes out grain free and sharp.
300 DPI is also fine for a billboard, but , for a billboard. having a super super crisp image is not as important as a poster anyway , becosue who is going to be putting their nose upto a billboard?
anywya , 150 DPI would work fine without blurriness , but go 300 if the work is detailed , the printer can handle it fine.

i have been involved in printing magazines covers and a few billboards over the last few years and i have to say that 150dpi would never be fine for a magazine, ad or otherwise. Pick up and look at a magazine or book with photos/illustrations and you will see no pixelisation, why??? beacause you read a magazine 1/2 feet away from your eyes, i have never known a magazine to be printed anyless than 250dpi (unless its a newspaper print)..
now look at a poster 1/2 feet away and you will see the dots,why? beacause its printed at a lower ress, beacause its on a wall that you would view 3/6 feet away.
if the printer and Jinx_20191 have the means to print large posters at 300 dpi then fine, although i wouldent want to work with files that large, thats not to say Jinx_20191 dosent. But i do not agree with jtk77's veiws on printing...sorry

so you're saying that you should print a 5 x 6 magazine ad at a higher res than a 24 x 32 poster? thats interesting.
is that what you ment ?

acualy.. you know what ? you're probbaly right..
I usaly send magazing stuff at 300 to 250 DPI anyway .
150 to even 100 if its going in the weekly newsapper.
Depending on what they want.
but I see certianly see what you mean when i thought about it for a sec.
I still think he should go with the 300 dpi if he can for a poster.
Acuialy th best advice is find who is going to handle the print job , the size of the poster and jsut ask 'em what they want.

As I said earlier it depends on the LPI value of your otput device, so if you intend to utilize the output defice to the full then use 1.6-2,2 times the LIPI value. Anything larger than that just wastes space and prolongs printing...

Anything less on the other hand will lower your quality.
But 300 DPi is fine for most jobs but i have had to do images with 600 (a3 size) dpi quality, for a fotometric sublimation printer (this is kindof overkill because a sublimation printer wont rasterize colors at all), so the point is that you cannot know the resolution needed unless you know what it will be outputted for and what it will be used for. Period.

PS its a good idea to use sublimation printers for your portfolio pictures, yeah its a bit more expensive but the quality cant be beat.
