Revisiting SEM shader, electron microscope shader

I am working on an electron microscope shader effect which is basically detailed here:

and has a great source file of the shader.
A nice Surface Shader that works beautifully in Maya software render, but when rendered in MentalRay, it just goes wrong.
My hunch after much tweaking is that Mental Ray does not like the way the bump outNormal is passed to the Vector Product, to result in the dot product.
And there I have ground to a halt
Completely stumped.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Sincere thanks to you Joojaa for the reply!
I'm still a little out of my depth though.
I've looked at piping the 2d bump into a misss_set_normal vector and then putting the normal.outValue to the vectorProduct.input (dot product). No cigar. It's getting wierd and I'm floundering.
A further nudge in the right direction would be invaluable....
