Yes that would be me
Well i was talking about this to buch of students the other day.
What does advanced mean here? Soemthing complex or something simple? Well NEITHER, it means intteligence on the part of the rigger. So the rigger must understand what hes doing, why hes doing it, how much resources he has to spend, and what hes ultimately after with it. Then he should decide wherther to go hard or simple (in fact here simple is often better anbd harder to accomplish over the complex)
Now theese are all things you can not realy be taught in a tutorial. The immidate question that sprang form my peers was, why? Well the simple reason is intelligence. It cant be taught, or atleast not very efficently its something that you either have or dont (some studies seem to suggest that it can indeed be taought but it takes many many years of accumulated tought pattern fiddling). You can aways use kowlege to compensate for it but unless you realy are smart theres nothing one can do about this thing.
So how does this realate to tutorials, well tutorials are more like demosntrations on how certain things could be done. Now they do present a problem tough, since they show you 1 way of doing the thing you can juts go around copying it. But at the end of the day if you still dont undertand the whys and why nots you havent gotten anywhare.
What this means is that a article telling you how something works or should work or a comparasion fo theese is more valuable than any ONE thing you are shown how to do. Atleast unnless you arent one fo thos guys who can disasemble naything and figure out what it ate.
This is the reason why one shoudl teach himself to read the tech specs, the ideas and try things for oneself. THe manual is one of the best resources here along with soem maths and physics textbooks wich are the places theese all calcs come from (yes the ik solvers inner workings is described in a basic mechanical design book the particle solver in my dynamics 101 courses book, and splines in the math textbooks).
Theres a second reason for reading the how it works over show me! Most if not all studies on the subject comes in this form baceus ethats what the accademic world does. And it does this for you for free... you can wait ofr the tutorial but hey... normal mapping waas described before bump mapping was devised and most tutorials on came to be in 2000. Quite frankly I dont think one can afford to wait 30 years for some rudimantary ideas like this!.
NOW a smart advice is to try to understand fully one thing and thenn start diversifying from there (unless your a woman in wich case you shoudl do it the otherway aroud
)
