RUNNING AWAY (2004) : Animated Short

Hi there!
My name is Sebastien LABAN, I'm a student in a CGI School in Lyon, FRANCE.

This year 2003-2004, as my last year, every student needed to create a short film.
I've made RUNNING AWAY.

I've finished my last shot and I also made a website where you can find a Making Of,

yes it was very impressive indeed.
I find it almost unbelievable that one student can create a shortfilm on this high level within one year, i guess you must be a huge talent and a genius at the same time. congratulations!

yup this is just the thing you should get when working for a year on something. I mean anyone who gets less is not up to the job.

I mean this is a prime example why most will not make it. You need to be this good to do!

this is above standard, above expectations. people with less skills get jobs, i know lots of them. this guy did everything a whole company with a few employes would do within a couple of months.

Wow!! .... This .. is ... eh .. just perfect! Veeeery nice filmic aspects.
But their are some things I found rather suspicious .. I mean the sound effects are ... their are no words,... they are to good to be true.. But then why arent their any real voices when the president and the other dudes speak?? I mean,... you have recorded an airplane for god sakes and a human speech seems to be out of reach for you...?! Doesnt make any sence to me!
But Im guessing you took a "Sample CD for film" to get them sound fx? Or some sound effects from your school?

But this is very good! Alltho I found the little boy/ girl's face a bit strange, more particularly the mounth. The rest is superb!

Whats up with the green line at the bottom of your frame? Is this against piracy?

Do you have hand drawded pictures from this? I cant wait to see more animation from you! I wont forget the name Sebastian Laban, thats for sure

Btw, how long are you into 3D? (computer 3D, that is... sculpting at artschool, not counting! tho its a huge plus! hehe)

The green line probably shows up because you might have an old version of the divx codec (if i correctly saw what you mean).

I tryed to record voices but even though i treated them after in a program such as Sound Forge, i didn't have a nice grain of voice. A huge contrast between the image and the sound happened.
That's a very complicated job.
I decided to remove these from the soundtrack.

And the sounds were taken from the internet and websites such as 3dcafe. That was a hard part to find the correct sound in a nice quality.

And at last, but not least, the kid was the first character I worked with and since I had neved used Maya before, it was my first experience on rigging/skinning/blendshapes.

Your film was incredible! I'm just starting in a 2 year graduate program in Advanced Digital Imaging with Maya etc. so its really inspiring to see that.

Couple questions...

How long have you been working in 3D (I know you started with 3D Studio Max but when?)

How long did it take just to render it, and what type of machine did you render it on? Most of the other questions were answered on your website.

I must say without using Mental Ray or Renderman, you faked Radiosity extremely well.
