Running Shake On A Mac Seems Slow

i just bought myself a new g5 and having installed shake, notice that it appears to slow down a huge amount after i have either rendered or flipbooked. that annoying little "colour-wheel" pops up to tell me that the computer is doing something, but often i am not doing anything that requires any processing power, like moving around the node tree or moving along the timeline in manual update mode.
i use linux exclusively at work and have not noticed this problem to the same extent.
i have tried flushing the cache and purging the memory cache to no avail, so i was wondering whether shake perhaps isn't using all of the processing power available to it. perhaps it is only using half of the processors...
any ideas? is this just a mac thing?
it is a new g5 quad-core dual 3ghz mac pro. i assumed it would be able to rip through anything and am finding myself getting a bit annoyed.

hmm, since the mac pro is not g5 and g5s dont run at 3ghz i guess you bought an intel machine.
so you might want to make sure that you're running a intel version of shake (4.1) as well.
then make sure that you have enough ram to render your flipbook since otherwise disk swapping will kill performance. make sure your installation is not messed up.

if all that doesnt help, talk to your dealer about what's wrong.

i was abit confused by the terminology.
i'm actually running shake 4.1 on a mac pro 3ghz with 2GB RAM and it still doesn't seem up to spec.
are there settings i need to alter?
