Is there a way to capture a jpeg of the work area in maya?

What OS are you using?
If windows, simply press the PrintScreen key which copys the screen to the clipboard. Then use a 2D program of your choise, like photo shop, and paste into a new window.
Personaly I use windows so I can't help on any other OS.

If anyone else out there is wondering how to do this in Mac OS X, just push command+shift+3. Being that Quartz is Adobe Post Script based, the screen capture is a PDF. You can easily convert the PDF in any Adobe Application, into any type of file you want.

hi, any know know if it is possible to print out actual maya files, of images in orthagraphic view. rather than having to do screen shots..?

Well... maya is not a printing software. Do a snapshot in the render window save and print usinga any app! Even paint! but i suggest using photoshop, for many reasons but mainly that 50% of its price is due to its printterdriver!

thanks, the screen grab worked okay...

just wondering. where can i ajust the settings of the size of the render output. to make the image larger..? would that be better done if i had the view i wanted ie. perspective in full view (space bar) then render that? cos i normally render, while im in orthagraphic view.. with all 4 views visable. and i get a tiny image of about 300x 200 pixels big.

make the screenshot with the hardware render buffer then you can make as big obhjects as you like.... BUt you might want to widen the lines a bit in ps before printing the 4k image with 1 pixel wide wires
