Script folders

Im having abit trouble overriding the scripts in maya/scripts/others folder... its a nightmare sice iwe done it before. Now suddenly my own sripts wont owerride the default ones! Now i could do the changes in the others folder but... I don think my coworkers would be that glad.

So in what order of importace will scripts be exaecuted... Also why ah every user three different scrip folders (i can understand the idea bahind two of them, but the third)?

Also i reinstalled windows on a different partition, and wierd enough the new maya uses the scripfolders of the old one... Ok i realize it might be somewhere in my settings but how do i override this. Im going on a break (then do something ele before hitting the manuals again) now but if anyone has the answer itll be appriciated... im starting to become blind to the problem.

The best way to control your paths is configuring the maya.env file. Any script path that you define there will take precedence over these defaults (in order):

%MAYA_APP_DIR%maya4.0scripts
%MAYA_APP_DIR%mayascripts
%MAYA_APP_DIR%maya4.0prefsshelves
%MAYA_LOCATION%scriptsstartup
%MAYA_LOCATION%scriptsothers
%MAYA_LOCATION%scriptsAETemplates
%MAYA_LOCATION%scriptspaintEffects
%MAYA_LOCATION%scriptscloth
%MAYA_LOCATION%scriptslive
%MAYA_LOCATION%scriptsfur

Note: If MAYA_APP_DIR environment variable is not set then MAYA_APP_DIR defaults to %USERPROFILE% (usually C:Documents and SettingsyourUsername).

Yeah i fugured it out, w2k copied the env variables... but im still having problems with the preceedece of two scripts with the same name... Id asume that the higher it is on the list the more important itll be? am i right?

yep...Maya will use the first script with the given name it finds in your custom script path and then that list top to bottom. If anything else you can verify which script it is with whatIs.

FYI, I use these little scripts to tell me what Maya's Script and Plugin paths are. Can be handy:
