Script to fix smoothed UVs

I've wanted to write a script for a while now, but to be honest what I want is far beyond my MEL scripting knowledge and I was hopping someone here may be up for the challenge.
Where I work, we use low polygon models for animation, and then smooth over the animated mesh to a high polygon mesh at render time. We mostly use the connectPolyShape mel script for modeling and it works out a lot faster and easier than doing things in NURBS. However, as a lot of people know, when you smooth a low polygon mesh in Maya, the textures get very distorted. To fix this problem, we texture a duplicated high res. version and then use the transform command in Maya to copy the UV information. This works well, untill you have to make changes to the mesh and it needs texturing from scratch again.
In 3ds max V4, there is a option in the smooth command to fix the UV distortion, Maya of course doesn't have this and it's very very annoying.
What I would like to see is a script that fixes the UV mapping after a smooth. Personally I've been thinking about this for a while, but I my MEL skills are not up to the task. I'm sure this script can be wrote, but it will probably need a real MEL expert, which I'm not.
Dose anyone here have any ideas on how to write such or script, or better still, dose anyone here feel like writting it?
Thanks,

Richard
