Sculpt Geometry Tool Problem

I have a polygonal head I've been modelling based on a youtube tutorial. Basically the part where it comes to sculpting it with the sculpt geometry tool, said tool has no effect. The subds of the height, width and depth are 6,6 and 5 respectively for the head. I've tried smoothing it to increase the vertices but this has no effect. I've also reset the sculpt tool and messed around with the settings, again no effect. Part of the tutorial states to apply soften normals to the head before sculpting, seem to have no effect either as I don't notice any discernible softening, the head lines just turn orange. Can anyone help with this?

Anyone? Help would be greatly appreciated as its something which trips me up a lot. Also on an unrelated note how does one go about creating a guitar string in MAYA which curls at the end like on a real guitar? I've created a NURBs cylinder and would be interested to know if I should use a deformer and if so which one?

Chek that the sculpt tool has somw weight, chek that you dont have stylus pressure on if you use a mouse. Make sure object is selected when you select the sculpt tool.

Just need to figure out how to created a guitar string which curls at the end? Any way to do this?

Also I'm working through a Maya 4.5 tutorial book. I'm on the character animation exercises section. When I load the character ik set up file the model can't be moved, rotated etc. The icons for these operations show up in a greyed out colour. I've tried untemplating the object but this doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions as to whats causing the model to be static and how to fix this?
