Selecting/deselecting polys/points

Just installed 1.5.2.1 and started a new scene. Did the selection methods change when i wasnt looking? I cant seem to deselect points with the rectangle tool. I also noticed this in raycasting mode while selecting polys. The msg area displays SELECT and SELECT CLUSTER so what good is a three button mouse now?
Im setting myself up to eat my own shoe but where did it go?!!

Just go to the Select menu and choose 'Softimage|3D Selection Model'. If you were used to soft|3D, you will be at home...

The other option is to turn on the "extended component selection" found under the "select menu" up in the right top corner of the screen. it will allow you to tag and de-tag your points
