this could be done by smart use of de/selection methods i.e. LMB[+Shift][+Ctrl].. for the future think of adding a set of shading groups for each object if You are plan to do such shading changes often.
That is possible, but I'm dealing with a file of dozens of objects, all of which must share the same materials (I can't specify them as different materials, for various reasons).
This is also about avoiding attractive nuisance user error: it's really easy to select by material, and then either do a substitution or just delete the faces, and think that you're doing it only on the visible object. Granted, it only takes once to really get paranoid about it, but still.
