Selecting Vertices On Two Objects

For the life of me, I am unable to select two rows of vertices on two objects together - I am trying to merge them. Whether I shift select, select, do push-ups and select, anything and nothing, I can't do it - am I missing something? A settings preferences maybe? Help me please - or I will throw my budgie against the wall.

Well, selecting the first object by right-clicking it and selecting the vertices you want to merge. After that (without deselecting of course) select the second object (right-click, vertices) and select the desired vertices and you are done. Works perfectly. Did you lock one of the objects? Maybe you try to combine them?

Points cannot be merged between 2 separate objects they must be combined first

Okies, well the issue was that the vertices were already lined up very closely, so not feasible to select both rows separately. I had to separate them first, select both rows with shift/select and then scale them together and proceed. I was stuck on not being able to select vertices on two objects at the same time, in a single mouse stroke. Thanks very much for your prompt help - the budgie lives, just.
