Self-shadow And Mr

Hello all,

I am having a curious problem...when I render my selfshadowed fluid in Maya everything is wonderful. However when I render it with MR, it shadows only onto the ground, but not on itself. Has anyone an idea about this? Thanks again!

I am not sure what to make of noone experiencing this. Hmmm. No Self shadowing in Mental Ray. Is there something wrong with Maya-MR or is this operator error? I definitely need to render it MR. Should this be in the rendering forum?

make sure your shadows are segmented, not simple or otherwise

One difference with Maya is that in MR you need to enable raytraced shadows on your light. In Maya it will do internal raytraced shadows for the fluid even if shadows are off on the light or raytracing is diabled. In mental ray the self shadows are part of the normal raytracing.

Part of the reason is that in Mental Ray the raytracing is fast enough to handle the iterative shadow feelers efficiently. The maya shadow feeler call has more overhead, so the self shadowing was implemented internal to the fluid render in the maya render.

Also make sure that cast and receive shadows is enabled on the fluid( in Maya this is not required for self shadowing, but it is in MR).
Of course "real lights" should also be enabled on the fluid( although I assume you had this on ).
