Set Face, Edge, Vertex, Object select

How can I set the selection mode so that I am selecting faces, vertices, edges or objects?
This is normally done by right-click and chosing one of the options in the hotbox. I want to use this in my script so that the user does not need to open the hot box.

Try selectType and selectMode.

// set the select type to vertex
selectMode -component;
selectType -v 1;
