You can try to toy with the Incidence node (Illumination > Incidence). Choose the default mode, Camera Direction.
If you plug this node into the transparency, you will notice that the more the normal faces the camera, the more it is visible. On a cylinder, the sides will be transparent, because the normal are pointing away from the camera.
To tweak the effect, you can plug the node into Color_Correction, Invert, or any color adjustment node.
Also, the Incidence node can be used for almost anything: Reflectivity, Diffuse, Incandescence....
