Shake&graphics Card Problems

Hey everyone....

I have a very robust system...P4 3.6 3gigs ddr2 ram 10,000rpm HD, etc etc
and an ATI FireGl 7100

(my drivers are all up to date)

shake runs well on my system...however switching between color channels is painfully slow....i mean I hit
a for alpha and it just slowly scans/refreshes across my screen.....also when using proxies or a smaller viewing window you'd think things would speed up like they are supposed to but rather its slower!

my only thought is that its the graphics card....has anyone had any similar problems? are there any settings that I can switch? I've tried but nothing works......ATI tech help is a JOKE! or is this just a lost cause because shake prefers nvidia....

Shake uses opengl to drive it's gui and Ati's opengl drivers have been crappy in the past. Also like nvidia, the newest drivers are not the best or least buggy. Many times you have to use older ones.

Also try this environment variable:
NR_OPENGL_RENDER
1

Yea that's what I've heard....I guess I'll try some old drivers and see if that works.....

I have that environmental variable already....in fact I have to have it otherwise when I open
shake the gui looks corrupted ... you can see through it and see the desktop....very weird

I've been looking at some Nvidia cards....their highend geforce 7500 extreme or whatever it is (their quadro cards are just too expensive for me at this point)

and the specs are insane and seem to outdue my more expensive workstation card yet the cost is 300 or so dollars cheaper....WHY? if I were to switch to this card would it be a mistake since its kinda in the gaming category? I dunno I guess I just dont get it...

shake isn't very opengl intensive, it just needs opengl drivers that actually work and Ati isn't known for that. You could run it on a crappy geforce 5200(though I would go with something better). If your doing 3d too, like maya, I would look at something like a 6800 and soft mod it to a quadro. I have seen them for $150-200.

yea definatly...and I'm sure you can feel my pain since I invested in an expensive top of the line card to have a not so intensive program not work very well....sigh....

I am a 3d user as well but not hardcore so if 3d took a slight performance hit I wouldn't mind...

i'd say around $500 is my budget (at least I hope) I hope to try and sell my ATI card and get 3 or 4 hundred for it and add in whatever else is needed from my own pocket....which is why I was looking at the 7800 and 7900 series....
