Shake Running On Xp

Hi

I'm thinking about buying Shake for PC but I have a feeling it will only run on Linux and Mac.

Is it possible to run Shake on XP or do I need to install Linux?

If I do need to install Linux is it easy to install.

you can only run shake 2.5 on windows which is not supported and sold anymore (see above)

depends on your machine and your skill and luck

why dont you just try on a seperate partition and see if it works on your hardware?
i'm not sure if apple has dropped the linux version in price as well, if not getting a spiced up mac pro (3000) with an osx shake licence (500) will cost you less than a linux licence alone (5000) with much less headache and probably the fastest hardware available.

im sure you wouldnt mind buying a mac haha. by the time you go through the hastle of setting the pc up to do good composits, you would be close to done with your first composit on an apple anyways. just hook yourself up with a nice G5 or a Mac Pro.

1. You can pay 50K for the source code, then port it to windows XP if you really want it...

2. Other than that, you would have to run Shake under sometype of virtual pc program that runs linux under the hood.

The alternative, is learn Linux, and use linux, as you can do anything on linux, windows ... well that's another story.

1. You can do duel boot, its not a problem to setup.

Just be sure NOT to use the latest FC6 as you will never get the Drivers/Program to work under linux correcty as FC6 is not stable for this type of work. I recommend FC4 (Fedora Core 4) as this seems to be the most stable.

I just finished stabilizing FC5, but I needed a lot of workarounds to get it to work with Maya / Shake and other 3D apps.

Before you go duel boot, be sure to read A LOT of information about your machine, and search the fedora/linux forums for what other people have setup.

I recently got an intel mac and installed windows via bootcamp. Im really impressed with the speeds. In fact photoshop might be faster on the windows side then mac osx (i'll do some benchmarking and report).

The new version of Parellels allows you to natively run a partition through bootcamp directly inside MacOSX (not emulation). So you could run linux that way, or windows for that matter.

So with the new intel macs you can get the best of whatever OS you like and with parellels you have a great way to use multiple OS's together for all your various apps.

If anyone does decide to use bootcamp I recommend putting in an additional harddrive for all new OS's and partitions. The intel macs are the easiest machines ive ever used for swapping hard drives: no power cables no ribbons, its basically a hot swap once you open the case.
