Still battling...
Installing ATI drivers in Linux is not easy. I've followed all the tutorials online and still can't get the drivers to show, only Mesa. If I do get 'em in, I'll let you all know how I did it.

From my experience with ATI and linux it's just weeks of unnessary work to install the driver correctly. I know that apple has ATI and that Shake runs great on the G4/G5 systems. But as for a good linux setup I recommend a Quadro card from NVIDIA for your Linux Shake Setup.
In setting up over 50+ shake workstations the linux machines with the NVIDIA cards take the least amount of time and usually have very high success rate. On the ATI side its been 50/50 and we usually end up replaceing the ATI cards with the NVIDEA cards.
Another note, if you are using Maya , Shake and Houdini on the Same linux machine. I would suggest looking at the recommended configurations and supported graphics cards for the Linux platform.
Time and Time again I see people on the forums with SuSE 9.0 installed trying to install Shake or Maya. Fedora and RedHat (from what I understand) are some of the only distro's that support these software packedges. (please correct me if I am wrong, and post links if you believe other distro's are supported).
I am not trying to start an ATI / NVIDEA battle, because I know that each have there power and they are both very good cards. But as for configuration on Linux, I always recommed NVIDIA Quadro because its a supported card and the Software Developers will always work with you to get your install working.
