I'm going as well...should be a real hoot
First of all go to the SIGGRAPH site and use their schedule builder tool...it will help you organize your time. Don't try to sit in on every lecture and panel...it's not going to happen. Focus on what it is you're most attracted to. It sounds like you're going down there mainly to seek work, so set aside all day Wednesday for the Job Fair as it's a one day only event (something I missed out on a couple of years ago and could've kicked myself for). Be very realistic about this job fair...rarely is anyone hired on the spot and the employers talk with hundreds of talented artists and programmers. Do not be disillusioned...just go in there with a great attitude (but no ego...well, a very healthy one...just don't get cocky) and see what comes of it. Hit the Exhibits floor either between some of the lectures or in the mornings, when everyone's fresh and not wiped out from the day. Bring business cards. Network your ass off if you can...but don't just go to schmooze. Be genuinely interested in the people you talk with, not just out for your own gain. People like to talk about themselves and have others take an interest so consider this when talking to industry types. Definitely check out some of the after hours parties...A/W ususally throws a good one (they did the last time I was in LA in '99). Above all don't get into a panic...just kick it, relax, take advantage of some of the free demos/workshops the exhibitors hold to showcase new products, as well as the other SIG sponsored workshops, and have a ball! See ya there...somewhere
anyway as you might have guess it's first time for me at siggraph I just got out of school (MAYA RULES BY THE WAY) anyway I'm getting together about 60 demo reel for my self a more resumes and heading down looking for that place that offers a perfect job if there is such a thing ( keep hearing the stores of such a place) Anyway so I signed up for the full conference and I'm planning on going to as many courses as I can to learn the most I can and also to give out demo reels and resumes...I need adivce what's the best route to take how do I tackle this big even and get the most out of it? Please show me the way thanks in advance...
