the character will be primarily in fk.
so i want the ik to just follow the arm around until i need to use it and then when i do the
switch it's already in the same place / no blending needed.
this is what I thougt would be the best but if there is another solution that people use
for a single bone chain ik / fk solution let me know,

in simple words, I guess this would cause a cycle, thus won't work. A solution could be making a melButton that would read current position od FK-wrist and move IK-wrist control to this position. While You act in FK mode You shouldnt care about IK rig untill You do blending between FK and IK.. same true for opposite.
