smooth edges

Hi,
Is there a way of smoothing out sharp edges on a polygon without changing the overall polygon count. It must have the same poly count because I'm doing key shapes. Thanks.

My poly model has jagged edges where it's supposed to be smooth. If I smooth it out using EFFECT > ROUNDING I cannot use it anymore as a key shape as it would have more polygons than the other key shapes.

What you're looking for is a classical subd tool, aren't you?

Unfortunately, in Softimage 3D there is no such tool. But you can do it anyway if you have the Pheonix Tools, a set of great plug-ins, wich has this kind of function.

On a side note, you can easily do it, without any plug-in, if you use patch and nurbs objects.... I can tell you how if you wish so.

I think what he's looking for is "discontinuity" as scene in the Info > Selection dialog for the object.

I would apply a high discontinuity value such as 120 (the max), then use the "Edge Flag" menu in the Matter module to apply hard edges where needed.

If you object needs subdividing, then I would detach the isolated area, round/bevel/subdivide/smooth/whatever, then remerge it back to the original so as to reduce the amout of work.
