SMP kernel?

I'm running RedHat 9.0 on a dual Athlon MP workstation. And for every distro I've used, including this one, I've been booting to the SMP kernel, assuming that's the ideal for a dual-processor configuration. But am I wrong? Is SMP only necessary in a multi-node cluster? Just curious. Everything seems to work fine, but I'm not enough of a techie to know what's really going on here.

SMP = s.ymetric m.ulti-p.rocessor

You have to boot the SMP kernel in order to use the 2nd CPU. So yeah its ideal for dual CPU systems hehe
